1K Blog Marathon: Day 17
As I’m crumpling my paper for another ugly design I made, I thought to myself: “Why is it so hard for me to come up with a design that really suits me?”
I learn Adobe Photoshop during my first year in college. It’s not yet on our subject but my Instructor told me I have to learn it – so that I can do the design tasks that the graduating seniors will left. And the first task he prompt me? To add labels on vector fishes. Then I went on to practice myself, making a collage of my favorite anime characters! ^_^
As a Jack of All Trades, I know a few things in design. I used to be a Champion in Poster Making Contests, and my first love is drawing. But I’m not an expert, and I didn’t push through that career.
Then the time comes when an idea pops into my mind – I should have a logo for my branding!
I iterate on different ideas – Owl, Computer Laptop, Keyboards, Circuits – but it’s very hard.
That is why I am writing this blog post.
And that is why I have many crumpled papers in my desk.
Going professionally
I ask one of my colleague (he is a Graphic Designer) about my dilemma. He says that the price is $$$$ for logo, together with email signatures, document headers/footers, branding etc. I will not tell you the price but it’s a bit “pricey” for me (you know, I’m just a Curbside Coder).
Then I message my Graphic Designer classmate in college (he’s the guy from our startup-company-turned–into-dream-only-company). I thought I can get it for free. And as our economics teacher taught us, there is the “Fallacy of Free Lunch” – in short, you can’t get anything for free.
So I create it myself. I browse all articles about creating a logo. I learned about the Golden Circle inside the Golden Square using the Golden Ratio. I learned about Negative Spaces, Font Logos, Abstract Logos, and Icon Logos. Then I searched about symbolism of Computer Programming.
Then comes Conway’s Game of Life.
Now, I have an idea to play with – the Glider.

And I like to merge it with my favorite number – 7.
So I came up with this design!

But later on, this design gets old. I want a new design.
So I ponder again, and this is the result.

But I can’t extract more, so I scream. I ended up with this screaming boy.

Just kidding, this is my real output.

What do you think folks? You can hit the comment box and share your thoughts! Any suggestion will do! Just don’t charge me ^_^. But for now, I will just use this latest design just for branding.
